The global climate crisis demands a radically different approach to how journalists and scientists engage with each other. Traditionally, these two disciplines have had contentious relationships. But the two disciplines have more in common with each other than their differences reveal. At a time when the public needs more equitable and actionable communication, we propose a different way of working with each other – immersion, engagement and even collaboration between scientists and journalists. In this panel discussion, we bring together three organizations focused on bringing scientists and journalists together and explore the impact of these different ways of working together. The Metcalf Institute at the University of Rhode Island will share the impact and learnings from its immersive workshops for journalists and scientists to engage with each other for more than 25 years. The Constructive Institute, based at the Aarhus Institute in Denmark, will share the work of its first "Climate Explorers" cohort, which brought together five of the world's top climate journalists with an interdisciplinary group of scientists and industry partners. The European Journalism Center will highlight the work of its journalists and how they engage differently with scientists to tell a more holistic story.
