Research conducted by IN/LAB with news outsiders from socio-economically disadvantaged areas in Sweden shows that they perceive current news reporting as worsening the public perception of them and their neighbourhoods. This sentiment aligns with findings from disadvantaged communities in countries such as the US, Brazil and UK, as reported by the Reuters Institute (2023). Recognizing this shared global challenge, we believe that understanding its potential future implications can help media organisations navigate the present more effectively.
We intend for journalists in this workshop to construct future mini-scenarios. This involves integrating current insights about young news outsiders with broader cultural and social trends, as well as technologies such as generative AI. By exploring possible futures and their implications, we want to equip journalists to envision what a desired future might look like.
