In 2023, many organisations in journalism began experimenting with generative AI. Way too often though, the audience was completely missing from the conversation. One year later, the situation has improved a little but not enough: the goal behind most AI-related experiments is to chase marginal gains in efficiency and productivity, rarely to explore how AI can help us rethink and innovate the way we serve our audiences. But we can’t make journalism more sustainable without radical new solutions and creating products that people actually want. Removing AI from the centre of the conversation, a group of media people working in product, innovation, UX, and engagement started laying the foundations for an initiative that aims to explore avenues to make journalism more user-centric, and more equitable and sustainable as a result. In this panel, we will share what we have learned together so far, and the principles that we believe should guide us in building the futures we want to create.
