How can news organizations foster constructive journalism? In 2023, DW – Germany's international broadcaster – launched a one of a kind training program for its journalists in partnership with the Bonn Institute. The fellowship aims to train reporters and editors to produce more – and better – constructive reporting, and to share the knowledge they gain with their teams. What did the fellows learn about what works – and what doesn't – when reporting constructively? What did the team organizing the program learn about training constructive journalists? With this talk, the goal is to share the practical lessons learned from the fellowship with other colleagues passionate about constructive journalism. This includes why embracing a 'small steps' approach to constructive reporting can be make a real difference, especially in news coverage, without giving up on big constructive ideas.
