Since its launch in 2022, the Oxford Climate Journalism Network (OCJN) has worked with over 500 journalists from 120 countries, moving the climate conversation beyond doom-and-gloom and towards impactful journalism. At AFP, one of the world’s largest newswire agencies, the top editorial team concluded that new efforts were needed to improve their climate reporting. In that vein, they have re-structured their teams and assigned new responsibilities to key people in the newsroom. In this fireside chat, Mitali Mukherjee, the director of Journalist Programmes at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, who runs the OCJN, will have a frank and open conversation with the global climate editor at AFP. How do you report what seems like the end of the world, without losing sight of the solutions? How to involve desks and teams beyond the usual suspects? And what is the emotional cost for reports to cover this story?
