Solutions journalism might sound like the opposite of investigative journalism. Actually, it's a great tool to make an investigation more powerful. One journalist said of her investigation: “The solutions stories were probably the meatiest of all of the stories in the series. They ruffled the feathers of providers in this community who had grown used to the status quo and weren’t expecting to be challenged. They were the stories that sparked the most conversation here about what we can do differently and what we are not doing now.” Solutions stories do that by taking away excuses for failure by showing that it's possible to do better. This workshop, recently given to New York Times local reporting fellows, will show participants how solutions stories add impact, and help them find the right solutions angle for their investigations.
