Incorporating perspectives from India and the Global South, my workshop will focus on the practice of non-extractive disability journalism and making news inclusive for persons with disabilities. Not missing the disability perspective in the daily news cycle, using language that respects individuality, and framing that uses the rights-based approach and avoids biases and stigmatisation will be addressed. Narratives that shift the perspective from viewing disability through a lens of limitation to recognising it as a diversity will be discussed. Media accessibility, why it is crucial for equity and tapping into new audiences, and techniques for accessible media production will also form a part of the workshop. I bring to the table my research on disability inclusion in India’s news and newsrooms at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism and my fortnightly newsletter, Reframing Disability, which simplifies disability inclusion in journalism and content, where I interview people with lived experience, media creators and accessibility experts on best practices.
