Most public-interest journalism publishers are in or rapidly approaching financial distress. Despite the "winner takes most" success stories of a few global players, journalism is in dire straits in even the most affluent markets. Local journalism, in particular, is collapsing around us. How do we respond to the market failure news? Big problems need bold solutions, and I propose a comprehensive suite of policy reforms that any nation with a free press can adopt to encourage behaviour changes from the public, business sector, investors and even government institutions. These policies will change the game and ignite support for news media and investigative journalism in particular. We also propose an innovative global financing model to support public interest journalism that can be replicated at the country or continental level. Inspired by "Volcano Bonds" of El Salvador and using Bitcoin as a long-term Treasury instrument, we can construct innovative financial solutions to support news media.
