Cristian is a storyteller, editor, and founder. He is currently the chair of the European Press Prize Preparatory Committee. For 13 years he ran DoR, a digital and print magazine that was an important landmark for Romanian independent journalism until it closed in late 2022. In 2020, DoR won the European Press Prize Innovation award, the culmination of a series of experiments it was known for: from new products, business models, and formats, to bringing journalism on stage, to creating community. Cristian is a 2014 Nieman Fellow, and a part of the 2024 CUNY News Innovation and Leadership cohort.

Care and connection: A plea for journalism at a human scale

With Cristian Lupsa

Journalism has traditionally been optimized for scale, efficiency, and speed. The public was the mass. The models are evolving, new roles are popping up, and as we stray from business as usual, I wonder: when you optimize for community, trust or care, is it still journalism? And does it even matter? I've spent much of the past year talking to people who center care and connection and community practices, envisioning new roles, and different futures. In this talk, I'll report back on what I found.

Community-led Design. The Future of Journalism?

With Shirish Kulkarni and Cristian Lupsa

Many marginalised people and communities feel let down by journalism. So how do we better understand what they really want and need from us? “News for All” is a radical collaboration between BBC News and Media Cymru, that’s putting those who are badly served by journalism at the centre of the design process, rather than on the outside. In this session, you’ll hear how prioritising connection, collaboration and care for communities is pointing the way to a reimagination of journalism for everyone.
