As a journalist at Luxembourg’s national public service radio, Rahel Könen reported daily on socio-economic and political affairs, producing broadcast news and feature stories around social inequities, environmental issues, climate change, and (inter)national affairs. She holds a BA in International Studies from Leiden University with a minor in Journalism from Monash University. After her newsroom experience she moved to Spain and then Sweden to complete a MSc in Human Ecology from Lund University. As a freelance journalist, she’s been inspired to work on constructive and solution-oriented stories with a focus on projects that connect human and planetary well-being as well as promote regenerative human-nature relations. Currently, she works as a science communicator at the European Forest Institute.

Social media and polarisation: what (else) do we see in environmental debates online?

How do social media and journalistic practices on these platforms contribute to the polarisation of public debates on issues like forest fires, wildlife protection, and rewilding? Do social media polarise debates, or do they bring different communities of actors together? Most importantly, what do our online mapping analyses tell us about the media's role when climate-linked events unfold? This workshop will explore the materials from our research to close-read, co-interpret, and collectively reflect on “what happens” on social media platforms at different levels of engagement.
